Auckland is New Zealand's largest city and the gateway through which most international tourists enter the country. It has a large international airport with regular arrivals and departures from around the world. Auckland is known as the city of sails as it is located on an isthmus of land in the northern part of the North Island. On its eastern shores is the Hauraki Gulf which is protected from the ocean swells by the Coromandel Peninsular and the Barrier Islands. On its western shore is Manukau Harbour which provides boating access from the west coast. Its central location makes Auckland the ideal jumping off point for tours or campervan and motorhome holidays around the North Island.

New Zealand is a safe country to travel in. It is located about as far away as you can get from the worlds trouble spots and this is one of the major reasons why it is so popular as a holiday destination. Auckland has a considerable climate range. If you come during the winter, you can expect strong winds and cold conditions so you should dress accordingly. In the summer the harbours are filled with pleasure boats and the weather is temperate. It is a great boating and fishing destination. In the winter Auckland is the entry point into New Zealand for thousands of international skiers wanting to experience the great ski resorts that New Zealand has to offer. On the north island, the ski resorts are on Mt Ruapehu which is an active volcano about four hours drive south of Auckland. Auckland is also the base for the campervan and motorhome rental industry on the north island and there are several large companies that have their depots here.

There are also plenty of youth hostels to cater for the many young backpackers who flock here to try the bungy jumping and other thrilling persuits. Self catering holiday apartments are great for families and there are lots to choose from in Auckland. You are sure to find something that will suit your budget. Restaurants and cafes abound and the harbour area in Auckland is a great place to visit. It has a cosmopolitan feel to it with restaurants surrounding the marina's and pleasure boats coming and going in the harbour. Many tour companies also call Auckland home and it is the starting point for all of the organized tours that take visitors to the popular North Island attractions.
