Fox Glaciers & Franz Josef

Considered to be the most accessible glaciers in the world Franz Joseph and Fox Glaciers lie in Westland National Park on the West Coast of the South Island. They are one of the major attractions on the New Zealand tourist map being 2.5 hours from Greymouth and 4.75 hours from Queenstown. Both glaciers are unique in the fact they both finish at the edge of dense rainforest and it certainly makes for some stunning scenery. They both move ten times faster than any other glaciers in the world which makes the ice a bright white and dynamic sight. A visit to Lake Matheson is a must while visiting Fox Glacier. The deep still waters are surrounded by walking tracks which provide the perfect platform to view a mirrored reflection of the mountains beyond. Make sure to stop at the Matheson Café before you embark on your walk for great views from the expansive deck while sampling home made delicacies. There is also a gift and art gallery here and an information centre out the front to familiarise yourself with the area.

Travel another 20 minutes out to Gillespies beach to see the seals and visit an old gold mining settlement. There are many ways to explore Fox and Franz Joseph Glaciers with the best base being Fox Glacier Township. Accommodation here includes motels, lodges and backpackers and the bed and breakfasts are welcoming and friendly. The town has a relaxed, intimate, rural atmosphere and a choice of nine places to eat which include cafes, restaurants and hotels. All accommodation is within walking distance of the town. Visits to the Glaciers are by guided walking tours or helicopter flights. The helicopter option is a favourite when combined with a walk (heli hike) or ice climbing (heli climb). This way you get a scenic flight, a glacier landing and a snow walk. Fox Glacier is 6kms from the township with Franz Joseph another 21kms away. Guided walks and heli tours depart regularly to the Glaciers and can take anywhere from 3 – 9 hours. Scenic flights are around 30 to 40 minutes and some will take you over both Glaciers. There are many scenic walking tracks around the area which you can take yourself. Regular shuttle services operate between Fox Glacier, Franz Joseph Glacier and Lake Matheson.
