Gisborne

Situated on the North Island, Gisborne is the first place in New Zealand to see the sun and is also known as the Chardonnay capital of New Zealand. Maori culture is evident throughout the area as Gisborne was the original landing place of Captain Cook. Take a tour to a traditional Marae, experience a traditional Maori greeting or visit the place where the film Whale Rider was made. The Tairawhiti Museum and Arts Centre has a large photographic collection on show of the early settlement years as well as original cottages, art works and artefacts. There are a great selection of rock pools and secluded beaches for the family to explore. Swim with the sharks in a purpose built cage or feed the stingrays. Enjoy trout fishing in the many picturesque rivers or kayaking and hunting in Te Urewera National Park. There are many walks in the Gisborne area. A highlight is a visit to the Eastwood Arboretum which has the largest and most colourful shrubs and trees imaginable. The walkway weaves beside lakes and ponds and is extremely beautiful. If you have a few days take the Lake Waikaremoana walking track, it is rated in the top ten best walks in New Zealand. Go on a horse trek or visit the glow worm caves. Try river rafting on the mighty Motu river or take a drive out to Waikoeka Scenic Reserve. Soak away your tired muscles at the Nikau pools at Morere Hot Springs surrounded by native forest. There are over 20 boutique wineries within an easy drive from Gisborne’s City Centre including one Brewery. Gisborne plays host to a variety of festivals and shows and the wineries are popular venues for many of these. Dine at Gisborne’s Marina precinct which offers a diverse selection restaurants and cafes overlooking the marina including the local fishing club. The fully restored Steam train WA165 runs regular train rides. Take a scenic flight out to White Island, Lake Waikaremoana or the eastern coastline. Gisborne has accommodation to suit all tastes and budgets and has a relaxed atmosphere, great beaches and the high proportion of Maori living in the area give visitors a great insight into Maori Culture.
