Milford Sound

Located on the South Island, Milford Sound is one of New Zealand’s premier tourist destinations and is situated a 4.15 hour drive from Queenstown and a 1.40 hour drive from Te Anau in Fiordland. The Sound’s dramatic landforms and pristine waterfalls combine to create some of the most stunning scenery in the country. The best way to view Milford Sound is by boat. There are a wide range of cruises available from 1-2 hour short trips to overnight stays and tours depart from Milford Sound Visitor’s Centre. Coach transfers leave from Te Anau and Queenstown on a regular basis which connect to the cruises The Fiordland National Park is home to many species of wildlife including dolphins, seals and Fiordland crested penguins. Southern Right whales have also been seen in Milford Sound on occasion. Due to its remote location the birdlife is prolific and the rainforest is untouched and pure. Milford Sound is 15km long and has the highest rainfall in New Zealand. After heavy rain a collection of waterfalls form to cascade over the steep cliffs.

These waterfalls will last for several days after the rain has subsided. There are two waterfalls which remain all year round Stirling Falls and Lady Bowen Falls and many of the boats will nose their bows close to under the falls for a close up view. Other activities around Milford Sound include canoeing, camping, diving and sailing. There is an underwater observatory in Milford Sound at which you can view black coral that is normally found in much deeper water. The coral here is relatively close to the surface making for some spectacular viewing. Hikers will not want to miss the Milford Track Walk which is known as one of the best walks in the World. The walk takes four days however there are also highlight guided day walks which will take you to some of the best spots including the Clinton River, untouched beech forest and beautiful lookouts. Scenic air tours depart from both Queenstown and Te Anau for a bird’s eye view over Fiordland. Accommodation is limited at Milford Sound and is more often found at either Te Anau or Queenstown.
