The Mount Hutt ski field is located in the heart of the southern alps of New Zealand. It is located just over an hours drive from Christchurch which is the largest city on the south island of New Zealand. You can drive yourself to the resort or you can come on the snowbus. As there is no on snow accommodation, Christchurch is the most popular place to stay. There are a number of coach operators who take daily trips to the snow. Mt Hutt has a skiing area of 365 hectares and a vertical drop of 683 meters. The groomed ski slopes are serviced by three separate chair lifts and there is a wide range of terrain that includes 25% beginners, 50% intermediates and 25% advanced. The longest run is the international of two kilometers.
The service center is second to none. There is a comprehensive ski and snowboard hire shop, retail center together with an emergency medical center and evacuation facilities. There is a licensed crèche and one stop children’s center. An excellent ski school with magic carpet lift for the beginners and a 10000sq meter terrain park with everything you can imagine including rails and half pipe. Experienced skiers and boarders will be delighted with the facilities.
There are three eateries on the mountain. The fast food café caters for that quick burger and coffee between runs. The licenced brasserie has a large sundeck and huge windows to take in the panoramic views. It offers a full breakfast or lunch with lamb shanks and shushi a speciality. The Sky High cafÉis a great place for a quickie meal.
Mount Hutt is a skiers or snowboarders paradise. It is known as the Capital of Speed and experienced skiers and riders will appreciate it black diamond runs. Mt Hutt hosts social and racing events and many of the leading racers in the world do their training at Mt Hutt. Mount Hutt is part of a group for wich you can buy a superpass that will allow you to ski at other great ski resorts like Coronet Peak, Treble Cone and The Remarkables, all located close to Queenstown at the southern end of the island.
