Wellington is the nation's capital and it is situated at the southern end of the island overlooking the straights that separate the islands. Wellington is known as the windy city and it is also located on the shores of a superb harbour. The inter island ferry connecting the north island and the south island departs from here. Wellington is famous for its scenery and a trip to the botanical gardens on the city' cable car will reveal a magnificent panorama across the entire city. The nation's museum, "Te Papa" is situated here and it displays a superb history of the nation including its Maori and European origins.

In the north of the island lie the magnificent Bay of Islands, the Waitangi treaty grounds and the ancient kauri forests that includes "Tane Mahuta", the second largest tree in the world.
