The inland City of Palmerston North is the centre of agriculture for the Manawatu/Wanganui region on the North Island of New Zealand. Located half way between Rotorua and Wellington, Palmerston North is also full of students who study at Massey University. The city centre is alive with funky cafes, bars and restaurants which reflect their presence. The bustling city is built around the square, a huge park of mature trees, waterways and gardens. Historical buildings have been well preserved and renovated to house the business sector. Friday night markets are held in the centre of the city during the summer months and combine a vibrant collection of locally produced food, arts and crafts. Many attractions are within walking distance of the square. Te Manawa Science Centre is the only centre in New Zealand to feature an art gallery, museum and science section all under the one roof. Exhibitions change regularly and the venue will soon also include the New Zealand Rugby Museum on its premises. Palmerston North has over 100 parks, the most popular being Victoria Esplanade situated beside the Manawatu River.
The park consists of a miniature railway, aviary, playground and beautiful gardens. Marlow Lagoon is another large expanse of parkland which is popular for holding local events. The Manawatu region also has a great selection of top quality public gardens to visit and activities abound. Visit the Tui Brewery in nearby Mangatainoka or take a guided kayak trip or Jet boat ride down one of the mighty rivers in the region. Marvel at the Te Apiti wind farm up on the hills above the Manawatu Gorge while you take in the views back towards Mount Ruapehu. You can take a horse and carriage ride up to the nearby Tararua wind farm if you like and have a picnic at the top of the ranges. The town of Feilding only half an hour away has 11 small museums to view full of historical exhibits including Steam Engines, Clock, Horse & Carriage and letterpress collections. Palmerston North has accommodation to suit all budgets with many places in and around the central business district. The international airport is only 5.5 kms away. If you would rather spend a break away in the Manawatu countryside outside of Palmerston North, there are some superb lodges and retreats to indulge in along with the friendly farmstays and bed and breakfasts.
