Most tourists commence their holiday on the South Island from Christchuch. It's the starting point for almost all organized tours as well as the Trans Alpine Rail trip to the west coast. There is also a wide range of excellent accommodation on offer which includes backpacker hostels and superb resorts, hotels and apartments.
Queenstown is the most important tourist destination in the whole of New Zealand. It is located inland towards the southern end of the island on the shores of Lake Wakatipu. It is the center of an adventure travel industry that has no equal in the world. It is the home of the bungy jumping phenomenon, and thrilling jet boat rides that take tourists on high speed runs through wild river chasms and some of the worlds best skiing resorts are located here. All New Zealand tours include a trip to Queenstown or Wanaka. There is a host of other fantastic places to visit on New Zealand’s South Island which include Milford and Doubtful sounds, Stewart Island, The Franz Joseph and Fox glaciers, Arthurs Pass, Hanmer Springs and the Marlborough Sounds at the northern end of the island.
