Snowboard or ski at The Remarkables in NZ
The Remarkables is one of the best ski and snowboarding resorts on the South Island of New Zealand. It is situated about fourty five minutes drive along a sensational alpine road from Queenstown. There is no on snow accommodation so everyone stays in Queenstown and a shuttle bus services takes skiers and snowboarders to the slopes each day. The altitude at the Remarkables is higher than Coronet Peak and this makes for more consistant snow cover. The resort stretches over 700 hectares of land and has fantastic facilities. There is 220 hectares of skiable area. The lifting capacity is fantastic with three quad chairs, 3 surface conveyor lifts and 1 handle tow. The terrain caters for all levels. Beginners slopes occupy 30%, intermediates about 40% and advanced 30%. For backcountry lovers the 1.5km homeward bound is considered the best in bounds back country run.
The "Stash" is a Burton signature terrain park. This adds a kilometer long back country park experience. There are also half pipes and two terrain parks. The Remarkables has plenty of up to the minute snow making equipment on all the main trails. This extends the season and also ensures plenty of snow when nature takes a holiday. The Remarkables now has a free coach service from the snow center in Queenstown for those purchasing a full day, multi day or combo pass. It is an extra $10 to pick up from other locations. 3.6 kilometers of new barriers have also been erected along the alpine road to make those driving themselves feel a little safer. The views over the Queenstown valley, the Shotover River and Lake Wakatipu are absolutely awe inspiring.
The Remarkables has a fantastic services area. There is a huge restaurant and café for that ten minute break you need to revive, every so often. There is a really good rental service for those who prefer to hire their equipment on the mountain and also a ski and snowboard repair and storage facility. If you have forgotten something there is also a great retail ski shop. First aid and emergency services are always a priority and there is a great ski and snowboard school. There is also a licensed crèche and one stop children’s center.
