Turoa
The ski field of Turoa is located on the southern slopes of Mount Ruapehu and is situated between Taupo and Wellington in the Tongariro National Park of the North Island. Turoa attracts a large number of beginners and intermediates to its slopes with excellent facilities for both. Advanced skiers and snow boarders appreciate the long expansive runs and a feeling of space. The runs at Turoa are not as challenging as those of its sister ski field Whakapapa but there are less people here and the mountain feels bigger. There are plenty of off trail experiences to be had as well. The slalom race course is a great place to race your own time or a friend with precision electronic timing to clock your fastest run. It is suitable for all levels and ages. The lively settlement of Ohakune lies at the base of the mountain and provides skiers and boarders with everything required for a ski holiday. There is a good range of accommodation here as well as a great choice of eateries, ski hire and shops. The skiing season runs from June to October, snow permitting and the conditions are best here in spring with good powder and the best weather conditions.
Turoa has the biggest vertical drop in New Zealand as well as the largest chairlift. It is also the oldest ski park in New Zealand. There are 3 cafés on the mountain and a crèche to look after the younger members of the family while you enjoy the day’s skiing. The views from Turoa are expansive and best appreciated in front of the open fire at the end of a long day. Access to the car parks is via a fully sealed non tolled road although chains are required to be carried at all times. There is a chain hire and fitting service on the mountain or at Ohakune. A mountain shuttle service operates from the lower car parks up to base. Ski and board hire is available on the mountain and there is a souvenir and accessory shop there as well. There is a friendly information centre at the base of Turoa to help with any queries you may have.
