Holiday in Wanaka, New Zealand
Wanaka is located in New Zealand's central Otago district on the South Island and is one of the most picturesque holiday places in all of New Zealand. Lake Wanaka is the fourth largest of New Zealand's lakes and it is surrounded by magnificent snow capped mountain ranges, including Mt Aspiring. The town of Wanaka is located right on the shores of Lake Wanaka giving nearly all of the accommodation a picture postcard view. It is a popular tourist destination all year round and during the winter it becomes the après ski center for holiday makers snowboarding and skiing at the two adjoining ski resorts of Treble Cone and Cardrona. During the summer months, tourist flock here to use the lakes facilities and water skiing, boating and trout fishing become the major activities.
Wanaka is about one hour twenty minutes drive from Queenstown and most international tourists arrive via Queenstown airport or on an organized tour of the South Island. Campervan and motor home renters also come here in droves and there are seven local parks to provide facilities for them. Wanaka accommodation wants for nothing with a huge range to choose from. Everything from a great backpacker hostel through serviced apartments and top of the range hotels is available. Shuttle bus services to the ski fields operate during the ski season and day tours to local attractions are also available. Wanaka is in the center of a fertile agricultural region and local produce includes venison and wine growing. The whole region is a foodies delight with many great restaurants, cafes and cellar doors within an easy drive of the town.
The Mount Aspiring National Park is nearby and this attracts lots of campers and hikers and bushwalkers to the region. This is one of the most awe inspiring regions for fantastic scenery in the whole of New Zealand.
