Wellington is the capital of New Zealand and is known as windy Wellington. It is an extremely beautiful city located on a magnificent harbour which opens onto Cook Straights at the very southern end of New Zealand's North Island. Wellington has its own airport with regular flights to all New Zealand domestic destinations. It is also the terminus for the inter island ferry that carries passengers and vehicles to the South Island. Wellington is the seat of government in New Zealand and the commercial center of the region and the port for the local rich agricultural regions on its northern side. The city CBD adjoins the harbour and the main shopping precinct is always busy with tourists and locals alike.

Situated on the harbour front is "Te Papa" which is the national museum of New Zealand. Every tourist who comes to Wellington should visit this wonderful display. It traces the history of both the Maori and European colonization of New Zealand and the displays of the original war canoes that were used by the Maori people to sail from there homes in Tonga and Samoa to New Zealand are absolutely fantastic. Captain James Cook came here also on his epic journey of discovery and the original feather cloak that he was presented with by the Maori chiefs is also on display here. You might say, seen one museum seen em all, but in this case you would be totally wrong.

There is lots of excellent accommodation on offer in Wellington. There are many excellent hotels, Backpacker hostels and apartment style resorts which are great for families. The city center has lots of great restaurants and cafes and the whole city center has a wonderful cosmopolitan feel about it.

The scenery is also spectacular. Every tourist should ride the cable car from the city center to the botanical gardens which are situated high on a hill above the city and provides panoramic views over the city and the harbour. The Basin Reserve is New Zealand’s home of cricket and it is located right in the middle of town.

Wellington has many points of interest for tourists to visit within an hour or so drive of the city. The Tongoriro National Park and Mt Ruapehu are just to the north, The Martinborough wine growing region and Cape Palliser lighthouse are within easy reach and the Palmerston North region is also close to Wellington.
